Lot Essay

According to family tradition, the sitter is probably Esther Georgiana Caroline Gore, daughter of the 5th Earl of Arran. In 1894 she married William Frederick Danvers Smith, great-grandson of the founder of W H Smith, who later became 2nd Viscount Hambleden on inheriting the title from his mother Emily Danvers Smith.
