Lot Essay

This drawing is a study for the oil sold as lot 117 in the sale. The initial first drawing prior to this was sketched en-plein-air with Lowry. The artists then returned to the studio and Lowry suggested that Riley use the composite abstraction technique to create a second drawing, the present work. It was exhibited at the Salford Art Club, catalogue untraced.
