With etched curved single-edged blade double-edged at the point, gilt-brass guard bearing the Royal Arms, ivory grip-scales, and bullion sword-know, in original gilt-brass scabbard with two rings for suspension; together with AN EDWARD VIII COURT SWORD, with slender etched blade, gilt-brass hilt with shell-guard, and bullion sword-knot, in original brass-mounted black leather scabbard; and A LATE VICTORIAN BRITISH PATTERN 1895 INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD, the blade etched with the Royal Arms and the owner’s initials ‘C.H.K.C.’, in brown-leather-covered scabbard

Lot Essay

This group of swords belonged to Colonel Charles Henry Kemble Chauncy CBE who had a long and distinguished military career that began in 1895 with a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion the Cheshire Regiment before moving to the Indian Army and the 124th Duchess of Connaught’s Own Baluchistan Infantry where he achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel in 1923. In 1928 he was appointed Deputy Director of Movements and Quartering at Army HQ in India at which point he was the awarded a CBE and promoted to full Colonel. He was involved in the Wariristan (1918-21) and Mahsud (1919-20) campaigns and was mentioned in dispatches
