The shaped octagonal hinged lid depicting classically-dressed figures around a sacred flame, within a border of scrolled cartouches, the sides decorated with pastoral scenes, enclosing a removable tray
2½ in. (6 cm.) high; 15 in. (12,5 cm.) wide; 3¾ in. (9,5 cm.) deep

Lot Essay

The technique of using gilt-foil backing of tortoiseshell veneers to enhance the golden hue and lustre gives this mirror its magnificent Baroque richness. This technique was first introduced in the mid-17th century and can also be seen on cabinets-on-stands executed in Southern Italy, particularly in Naples and by Neapolitan craftsmen working in Majorca
