A closely related Roman console with very similar carved frieze, stretcher and legs from a private Bolognese collection is illustrated in S. Colombo, L'Arte del Legno e del Mobile in Italia, Turin, 1981, pl. 420. Further comparables include a console in the Count Paolo Diamilla Magnelli collection (G. Lizzani, Il Mobile Romano, Milan, 1970, fig. 128), and an example, recorded in an 1872 inventory of the Quirinale, Rome, illustrated in A. González-Palacios, I Mobili Italiani, Rome, 1996, fig. 54. Christie's, New York, sold a pair of Roman giltwood consoles, 28 March 2007, lot 292 ($78,000 including premium).
