A LOUIS XV WALNUT FAUTEUIL A LA REINE
THE CARLHIAN COLLECTION The two following lots come from the carlhian collection. Founded in 1867, Carlhian became one of the foremost decorating firms by 1905, taking over from the likes of Hoentschel, Lelong or Guiraud. This line of antique dealers specialised in panelling and restoring French 18th century boiseries. André Carlhian took over from his father in 1905 and assembled, very early on, a celebrated collection dedicated to menuiserie of the highest quality. In his sale in 1969, fifty lots out of the seventy offered were chairs. For the 73 Quai d’Orsay apartment he acquired in 1931, Carlhian sought out the best fauteuils but also exceptional console tables in keeping with his panelling. His collection was also renowned for its library, which included an impressive ensemble of recueils from celebrated ornemanistes as well as original drawings PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTION (LOTS 96 AND 97)

This remarkable fauteuil is caracterised by its regal, elegant moulding. Every element reveals the same talent: the arm supports in particular display great strength of line and movement. The decorative carvings are voluntarily understated, thus allowing the shaping to produce maximum effect.
Blaise Maucuy (1729-1798) was established in the area of Notre Dame de la Bonne Nouvelle, along with many of his fellow cabinetmakers.
