Lot Essay

These stools are based on a model designed by the French architects Percier and Fontaine for the Château de Saint-Cloud around 1801-2, later published in their Recueil de décorations intérieures, 1801-1812, plate 39. In England the design was borrowed by Thomas Hope for his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, and then by George Smith for his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture, 1808.
