Scrap album containing approx. 227 albumen prints, sizes approx. 1¼ x 1 in. to 7¼ x 9½ in., several c-d-v-size and several trimmed to oval, occasional numbers in the negatives, two with blindstamp Frith series on recto, variously mounted, the majority titled and dated in ink on mounts, lacking covers (partially disbound), 4to.

Lot Essay

Portraits of members of the Osborne family, political figures including Lord Palmerston and Gladstone; royalty; Ellen Terry; officers of the 57th Regiment; a portrait of a '[?Sholapur] Dwarf taken with a home-made camera'; natives in India including a group portrait of victims of the Indian famine in 1877; cricket groups and theatrical groups.

It was a Mrs. Osborne of Newtown Anner, Clonmel who among others, encouraged the amateur Irish photographer William Despard Hemphill to produce a book on Clonmel and the surrounding area with mounted-in stereographs. This album was found in the Clonmel area and is thought to have belonged to a member of the Osborne family.
