Lot Essay

A nearly identical frame with a mirror in a private colletion bear a label on the reverse "Made by hand by William Whitaker 1862". The similarities in construction and decoration suggests they may have been made by the same artisan. For another similar example, see William C. Ketchum, American Folk Art (New York, 2009), pp. 28-29.
