The Clippership Red Jacket was built in Rockland, Maine by George Thomas in 1853. She gained infamy when, on her maiden voyage from New York to Liverpool, she set a speed record for sailing ships crossing the Atlantic, arriving at dock in 13 days, 1 hour and 25 minutes. She was then chartered, and later purchased, by the White Star Line for use in the Australian immigrant trade running between Melbourne and Liverpool. Between 1872 and 1883 she carried lumber from Quebec to London before being sold to a Portuguese shipping company as a coaling hulk. She was driven ashore by a gale in 1885 and the wreck, with 200 tons of coal aboard, sold for 112 pounds.
