Lot Essay

Individual portraits of team members include Lieut. Pennell working in the pack with a prismatic compass, Lieut. Rennick with the sounding machine, Dr. Wilson loading a whale gun, Dr. Levick skinning a penguin, Capt. Oates and Seaman Abbott picketing ponies and several studies of Ponting "cinematographing" and "photoing". Other series include atmospheric and cloud effects, the sun's first appearance at the end of August 1911 over the Barne Glacier, the team's preparation for the Southern journey, a detailed study of the Adelie and other penguins including their nesting and hatching habits, named portraits of the dogs, and two portraits of men sitting on crates of Heinz Baked Beans.
