Lot Essay

Australian Frank Hurley became a specialist in Antarctic photography. He accompanied Sir Ernest Shackleton on his trans-Antarctic expedition in the 'Endurance' which set out in 1914. When the ship was crushed in ice in 1916, Shackleton and five companions made a trip of 800 miles to the north coast of South Georgia to get help.
