Lot Essay

Augustus John travelled to America in 1924 aboard the well known cruise ship The Aquitania, arriving in New York on the 11th April of that year. Listed amongst the passengers on that journey was a Mrs Edith H. Andreae, a resident of New York, of whom presumably John became an acquaintance of on the voyage and thus made this sketch.
