The Metropolitan canvas is a fine, late 18th-century copy of the celebrated Self portrait 'aux rubans cerise' by Vigée Le Brun that is known, according to Joseph Baillio, in three autograph versions: a signed canvas in the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth; a signed version on panel formerly in the Greffulhe collection; and a version formerly in the L. Lévy collection, Paris.
