Lot Essay

In 1936 Jo Davidson created a plaster statuette of Thomas Paine as a submission to the Thomas Paine Memorial Committee for a large outdoor sculpture of the historical figure which was to be erected in Paris. Ultimately he lost the commission to Gutzon Borglum, but in 1940 Davidson had the present cast made at Roman Bronze Works.
