Lot Essay

The 'F.A.P.' following Pereira's signature likely refers to her participation in the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Project Administration formed under President Roosevelt's New Deal to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression. Lasting from August 1935 to April 1943, the program employed approximately 5,000 artists who created posters, murals, paintings and other works of art for public buildings and parks. The present work retains a WPA label on the reverse.
