Lot Essay

The present work demonstrates the unique results of Jose de Creeft's "taille direct" technique of direct carving to create a spontaneous artwork rather than a predetermined design. Influenced by tribalism and primitivism, 'Repose' is a superb example of the mystical, almost archaeological creations de Creeft rendered with this technique.
