Lot Essay

The present work depicts a field in Salem, Ohio, where Charles Burchfield spent his childhood and early adulthood from 1898-1921. In the 1930 Museum of Modern Art exhibition catalogue, Burchfield poetically described Drifting Dandelion Seeds as "Winged dandelion seeds scattered obliquely across the overlapping layers of a hayfield by a fresh June wind."
