Settle beds were common in Irish houses after 1850, but more usual for adults. Many have several layers of paint but this example is unusual in having only its original paintwork. Also unusual are the weighted iron hanging feet on the front which allow for the bed to sit level on the floor when folded down. The sledge feet keep the bed raised above floor level.
