Lot Essay
In 1900 Marianne Stokes and her husband Adrian held their first joint exhibition, 'Adrian and Marianne Stokes Dutch Life and Landscape' at The Fine Art Society. Amongst the 33 works exhibited by Marianne were several of young Dutch children painted in 1899, such as Mending the Kite which depicts the same two children as in the present lot. (See M. Evans, Utmost Fidelity: The painting lives of Marianne and Adrian Stokes, Bristol, 2009, p. 97.)
