Lot Essay

Charpentier & Cie was located at 8, Rue Charlot, Paris in 1860, and was later known as Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie circa 1870 to 1890. They exhibited mantel clocks, garnitures, torchères and vases at the Expositon universelle of 1878 in Paris as well as the impressive example of Piat's grande horloge. The present model closely relates to a design from circa 1780 in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and illustrated in H. Ottomeyer & P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Münich, 1986, Vol. I, p. 251, no. 4.6.23. A clock of this model was sold Sotheby’s New York, 15 April 2011, lot 5, ($37,500).
