Lot Essay

With their laurel crown and draping neckline, the bustes de femme à tête laurée on the present commode feature on a series of important works by Riesener, including a commode in the collection of the Hillwood Museum, Washington, DC and a commode delivered in 1774 for the cabinet intérieur of Louis XVI at Versailles, now in the Royal Collection. This model in turn derives from a draped female term employed in several pieces by Martin Carlin.
