Lot Essay

The two works offered here show depictions of the Rhine at different points in his career. The first work, of the Rhine at St.Goar, Germany was executed in 1838, whilst on a tour of Germany and Switzerland. That same year, he was elected as an associate of the Old Watercolour Society. The second work, of the Rhine at Drachenfels, Switzerland, was executed toward the end of his life in 1900 and was most probably done from memory or from an earlier sketch, possibly even from the tour of 1838. Earlier in his career, between 1827 and 1829 Callow had worked in Paris for Thales Fielding, A.O.W.S (1793-1837) at the Fielding family print business. Whilst there he came under the artistic guidance of Thales' brother, the artist, Newton Smith Linbird Fielding (1799-1856), see lot 352. After the French Revolution Callow returned again to Paris where between 1831 and 1834, before his trip in 1838, he shared a studio with Thomas Shotter Boys, N.W.S. (1803-1874) see lot 350.
