Lot Essay

The present lot relates to the work in a private collection, with variations. The original was painted when Digby was in mourning, and included a sunflower and an inscription upper left, which are omitted here (see S. Barnes, N. de Poorter, O. Millar, H. Vey, Van Dyck. A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, 2002, p. 505, no. IV.95).
