Tian Manshi was born in Yancheng, Henan. She studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste Muenchen in German and received her honorary doctorate from Wonkwang University in Korea. Dr. Tian served as a member on the art education panel in Taiwan's Education Bureau and received professorships in colleges such as the National Taiwan Art Academy, Chinese Culture University, Taipei Hwa Kang Art School, Wonkwang University, University of San Francisco, and the Chinese Cultural Association at the University of California. Dr. Tian was known for her collection of Huang Junbi's paintings, especially works from his middle period, which are considered the peak of his career.
