A bronze altar of Shiva
Northeastern India, Orissa, 11th century
Seated in lalitasana on a double-lotus base over a waisted plinth with his pendant foot resting on a diminutive image of Nandi, the lower right hand in varadamudra and holding a jewel and the lower left in abhayamudra, the upper hands holding a lotus blossom and a bowl, clad in a short dhoti and adorned with various jewelry and garlands, the face with steady gaze surmounted by a low tiara with flared ties, the hair arranged in a tall jatamukuta, backed by a foliate nimbus and stylized flaming aureole topped by a kirttimukha
