A SOUTH ARABIAN LIMESTONE PILLAR STELE
CIRCA 3RD CENTURY B.C.-1ST CENTURY A.D.
Rectangular in form, sculpted in high relief with a male head with narrow oblong mouth with pursed lips, almond-shaped eyes recessed for inlay, now missing, long flat nose and protruding ears, a six letter epigraph identifies the owner as 'Ya'awsi-'il', with remains of red pigment

Lot Essay

The name Ya'awsi-'il means 'God gives/ has given' and is widely attested in most dialects of Old-South-Arabian.
