Lot Essay

"Ancient Indian Art is Air. Its forms are arabesque and boneless. They float in the air like the "Descent of the Ganges", the great 7th Century rock carving carving at Mamallapuram. In the erotic sculpture, like Khajuraho, all the maithuna (sexual intercourse) takes place in the air, as it were." Artist statement, A Tribute to Francis Newton Souza 1924-2002, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, February-March 2003
