TWO GREY POTTERY TOMB BRICKS
HAN DYNASTY (206 BC-AD 220)
Each is hollow molded and has impressed decoration on two sides of different arrangements of boss-filled lozenge-shaped panels, set between three rows of panels above and below, the panels in each row with a different repeated design, all within a narrow outer border of phoenixes on one and peacocks on the other, and an outer hatchured border. The larger brick has additional repeated pattern on the two narrow sides.

Lot Essay

For a smaller, square-form tomb brick in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, see Chinese Art in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, 1972, p. 149, no. 99. Another pair of tombs bricks of comparable size to the present two was sold at Christie's New York, 19-20 September 2013, lot 1251.
The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence no. C114a75 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
