A RARE AND FINELY MODELED DEHUA FIGURE OF GUANYIN
17TH/18TH CENTURY
The bodhisattva is shown standing in a graceful pose on a base of layered, and swirling clouds, with her body gently swayed to one side as she turns her head away. The stem of a lotus flower is held between her hands, and she wears gracefully draped robes and a ruyi hairpin to secure the topknot of her artfully arranged hair. The glaze is of creamy color.

Lot Essay

Although depictions of Guanyin holding a stem of lotus appear to be relatively rare among Dehua figures, the representation is rooted in Buddhist iconography, as it alludes to one of the Sanskrit names for Guanyin, Padmapani (Holder of the lotus).
