A BOXWOOD SCROLL-FORM BRUSH REST

The scroll-form brush rest is carved in relief with a grasshopper perched on an hibiscus bloom borne on a leafy stem, with an inscription ni Xinluo Shanren da yi, which may be translated as: 'In the style of Xinluo Shanren', followed by the artist's signature, Jin Jueshan, and a seal, Jueshan.
5 7/8 in. (14.9 cm.) long

Acquired in Cape Town in the 1960s.

Lot Essay

Jin Jueshan, active during the 19th century, was a student of the Yangzhou School bamboo carving master Wu Xizai (1799-1870).
