Lot Essay

The inscription incorporates a line from a poem on prunus by the Northern Song dynasty poet Lin Bu (967-1028), and may be translated, 'faint fragrance floats under the dusky moon'. This is followed by a seal, Wang Zheng, possibly the name of the calligrapher; the date, Winter, 1st year of Daoguang (1821); a signature, Jiang Yuan, possibly the name of the carver; and a further seal, Jiang.
