A CARVED GREEN JADE INKSTONE
18TH CENTURY
The inkstone, of rectangular form with rounded corners, is carved at the end with a well below a finely detailed phoenix grasping a lingzhi in its beak, one of its wings trailing down to where a small sun amidst clouds is carved on one edge. The flat surface of the base is carved with an inscription in archaic script followed by a seal. The stone is of pale green tone with darker greyish and buff-colored striations and inclusions.

Lot Essay

The poetic inscription reads:
Yi pin dang chao, which may be translated as 'May you become an official of the first rank and preside at court.'
The seal may read either as Sanzhai, Sanxuan, or Sankang, which may be a sobriquet.
