A PARCEL-GILT BRONZE CENSER
16TH/17TH CENTURY
Of bombé form, the body is chased with a band of mythical animals centered on one side by a phoenix and on the reverse with a lion, below a band of interlocked foliate scroll and above two small stylized masks flanked by stylized birds on the foot, all highlighted by gilding in contrast to the dark ring-punched ground. The pair of handles has a stylized mask at the top, peaches on the sides and a pendent animal head at the bottom. A maker's mark, Yunjian Hu Wenming zhi (made by Hu Wenming of Yunjian), is inscribed in a gilded rectangular cartouche on the base.
