A RARE TURQUOISE AND LAPIS LAZULI-INLAID GOLD TWO-PART THUMB RING
QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The 18k gold thumb ring is made in two parts, a visible outer section and a 'secret' inner section, which lock together on the interior. The outer section has an openwork outer wall of shou characters inlaid in turquoise between narrow bands of lapiz lazuli T-fret, all within fine rope-twist borders, and an inner tube cut with a hooked notch. Into this tube slides the collar of the separate 'secret' section, which has a tiny circular button and is inscribed, shui huo ji ji, wan wu de jin dai, Qianlong yushi (When [the two opposing elements of] fire and water become balanced, everything will find its rightful place. Imperial inscription by Emperor Qianlong), in three vertical lines below the rounded, everted rim.
1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm.) diam.
Provenance
Joseph Cresalia (1868-1960) Collection, acquired in 1910, and thence by descent within the family.
