Lot Essay

The double-gourd shape was popular for snuff bottles because of its tactile qualities when held in the palm of the hand, and for its auspicious symbolism. The gourd represents abundance, and double gourds represent the extension of the family line through many sons.
A similar example from the Hildegard Schonfeld Collection was sold at Christie's New York, 21 March 2013, lot 1057.
