A SMALL GREENISH-YELLOW AND RUSSET JADE FIGURE OF A MYTHICAL BEAST
The seated, dragon-headed beast holds a lotus bud in the right paw and a string of beads in the left paw on the bent left knee. The creature has pendulous breasts above a protruding belly and is detailed with slightly open jaws, an incised beard, a pair of long curved horns, a knobby backbone and areas of scales, and is drilled with a vertical channel. The stone shades from pale greenish-yellow to brown and opaque buff with russet color.

Lot Essay

A similar jade figure, described as a horned demon, is illustrated by J. Rawson in Chinese Jade throughout the ages, Oriental Ceramic Society, London, 1975, no. 194, where it is dated Song period or earlier. Another similar figure, dated Ming dynasty, is illustrated in Chinese Jade Animals, Hong Kong, 1996, pp. 162-63, no. 146.
