A FINELY CARVED SOAPSTONE FIGURE OF GUANYIN AND A CHILD
17TH/18TH CENTURY
The seated bodhisattva is shown holding a child in her lap, supported by her left hand. She is dressed in long, loose robes that are incised with foliate decoration and fall in folds around the body. Her face is carved with a slight smile and downcast eyes under upswept hair tied in a high chignon and partially covered by a long cowl centered by a tiara. The stone is of pale honey-brown color with reddish-brown inclusions.
