Lot Essay

These distinctive reeded cheval-mirror handles appear five times in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books, for instance in folios 3421 (June 1825) and 3761 (February 1830). They are also shown on a cheval mirror in the General Sketch Book of 1823 with almost identical base to the present lot. Most cheval mirrors by Gillows have full-height uprights, but one model, folio 3974 (April 1833), is exactly like the present mirror.
