Lot Essay

A Gillows-stamped chest of drawers with many similar constructional and design features, including these elegant 'kicked' feet (both front and back) and a triple-panelled backboard, sold Christie's South Kensington, 24 May 2011, lot 317. Two drawings in the firm's Estimate Sketch Books, folios 729 and 770 (both dated 1791), show feet identical to the present chest's. Gillows invariably described such feet as 'French'.
