Lot Essay

The brand 'EHB' is that of the celebrated dealer Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845), who traded as a 'Furniture Broker and Appraiser' and 'Foreign China and Furniture Warehouseman'. Baldock numbered among his clients King George IV, the Duke of Northumberland, William Beckford and the 5th Duke of Buccleuch, and sponsored a range of London cabinet-making firms and specialists in marquetry to fulfill his orders for fashionable Louis XIV and Louis XV-style furniture. In this case he appears to have turned to the leading maker George Trollope of Parliament Street, London, who listed himself as 'Upholder, carver, gilder... to His Majesty' in 1830. It is however conceivable that the present table was made by another London maker such as Blake, then sold by Baldock, then entered the second-hand stock of Trollope & Sons in the third quarter of the 19th century.

An almost identical Baldock-stamped table (apparently the pair to the present lot) sold Bonhams, Fine English Furniture, 11 March 2009, lot 114. A very similar satinwood Baldock-stamped table supplied in 1841 to the 5th Duke of Buccleuch is shown in G. de Bellaigue, "Edward Holmes Baldock: Part II", Connoisseur, August 1975, fig. 15.
