George B. Hartzog, Jr. (1920-2008) was Director of the National Park Service during the 1960s and early 1970s. During his tenure Mr. Hartzog oversaw the largest expansion of the system -- 72 sites encompassing 2.7 million acres -- including recreation areas, seashores, river ways and historical monuments, such as Gateway National Recreation Area in New York City and Golden Gate National Recreation Area on San Francisco Bay.
