Lot Essay

The present runner relates to three yellow-ground medallion Konya runner fragments in the Kirchheim Collection (Heinrich Kirchheim, Orient Stars, London, 1993, no.139 and 140, pp.214-215). Of the three, our runner is most similar to the largest fragment no.139, that has almost identical drawing, the same wonderfully bright palette and a three dimensional quality to the border due to the full pile and heavily corroded dark brown ground.
