Lot Essay

The 1:2:1:2:1 formation of the medallions in the present lot is unusual and is subtly combined with the distinctive five-flower lattice of the overall field design and the strong rhythm of the stylised waves in the border. The inclusion of two opposing dragons within the larger central medallion is also an unusual feature and emphasises the dragon's auspicious powers in Far Eastern iconography. The long dimensions of this carpet imply that it was almost certainly woven as a special commission for a Royal or courtly residence.
