Lot Essay

The present rug belongs to an unusual group of South Caucasian rugs characterised by their field of flowering stems with stylised rosettes that are reminiscent of the rosettes of Konya rugs. Most of the other examples have narrow blue or green fields such as those sold at Skinner, 12 June 1985, lot 118, and Rippon Boswell, 7 May 1977, lot 95. The present example is distinguished by being wider and having a golden yellow field and ivory border set with similar rosettes. Other related rugs in the group have been sold at Sotheby's New York, 8 October 1990, lot 20, 17 December 1999, lot 101 and 10 April 1991, lot 55.
