Gouache heightened with gold on paper, the kneeling youth in blue robes unties his multi-coloured turban on a ground with rocks and foliage in the corners rendered in gold, within a later gold and polychrome floral border on wide margins with gold scrolling vine issuing large cusped palmettes, mounted

Lot Essay

A similar portrait of a youth with a very brightly coloured turban which contrasts against his white skin and fine black curly hair in the Hermitage Museum is dated by Adel Adamova to circa 1680 and attributed to Isfahan, (Adel Adamova, Persian Painting and Drawing from the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, 1996, no. 31 p. 238).
