Poetry, Persian manuscript on paper, 86ff. plus 2 fly-leaves, each folio with 11ll. of fine black nasta'liq in clouds reserved against gold ground and arranged in two columns with double gold intercolumnar rule, text panels ruled in gold and polychrome and within margins with extensive gold and polychrome illumination, a roundel in the upper margin of each page with the Qajar emblem, opening bifolio with elaborately illuminated headpiece, four further similar headings within the text, first and final folios with later owner's notes, minor areas of staining, in lacquer binding decorated with scenes from the tale of Khusraw and Shirin, one side dated 1279, the doublures decorated with elegant Qajar youths
Text panel 5¾ x 3in. (14.6 x 7.6cm.); folio 8 x 5 1/8in. (20.4 x 13.1cm.)
Engraved
In two cartouches at the top of both sides of the bindings is the following inscription, 'It was completed on the order of, order of the excellent deputy, the most magnificent, the most elevated, the exalted Prince Ibrahim Mirza'
In the cartouche beneath the drawing of Khusraw and Shirin on the binding the inscription reads, 'Painting of Khusraw[and] Shirin, drawn by Muhammad Ja'far ibn Najaf 'Ali'
In the cartouche below the painting of Farhad and Shirin the inscription reads, 'Painting of Shirin [and] Farhad, year 1279 [1862-63]'

Lot Essay

One of the fly-leaves bears the seal of a Muhammad Taqi Khan Bakhtiyari (d.1851) as well as notes belonging to his son Muhammad Javad Khan Muntazim al-Mulk relating to both births and travel.
