Lot Essay

This bowl relates closely to a dish in the Museo Nazionale d'Arte Orientale in Rome which bears an inscription that is dated AH 873/1468-9 AD (Lisa Golombek, Robert B. Mason and Gauvin A. Bailey, Tamerlane's Tableware, Costa Mesa, California, and Ontario, 1996, pls.51 and col.pl.XI). Another dish in the same technique but with slightly less similar design, now in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, is dated AH 885/1480-81 AD (Golombek, Mason and Bailey, op.cit., pls.50 and col.pl.X). On the basis of an analysis of the clay, Golombek, Mason and Bailey attribute the group to Nishapur.
