A GEM-SET AND ENAMELLED GOLD COVERED CUP AND SAUCER
PROBABLY JAIPUR, INDIA, 19TH CENTURY
The cup of slightly widening cylindrical form decorated with green, red, white and blue enamels with a dense scrolling flowering vine flanked by minor borders with confronted birds alternated with palmettes, simple chequered bands between them, the body with handle formed as a fish and decorated with diamonds set in a lozenge lattice, with separate lid rising to knop finial and decorated with an outer band of diamond-set scrolling, flowering vine on blue enamelled ground, a central register of polychrome floral sprays, the saucer with a central roundel with elephant and tiger combat group, around this a band of polychrome floral decoration interrupted by four cusped medallions each containing paired birds, the rim with diamond-set floral meander on blue ground
Overall 3¼in. (8.2cm.) high; saucer 5 3/8in. (13.6cm.)
