SEUTTER, Mathäus (1678-1757). Africa. Augsburg, 1736.
Engraved map of Africa, colored by a contemporary hand, image 496 x 580 mm (523 x 651 mm sheet). With a large title cartouche engraved by Gottfried Rogg, depicting natives among lions, monkeys and an alligator. (Some minor marginal staining.)
This striking map of Africa is based largely on Homann's 1715 map. Seutter succeded Johann Baptist Homann as the leading map, atlas and globe publisher in Germany in the 18th century. The coastline is filled with place names resulting from numerous maritime expeditions. The interior "is crowded with erroneous detail" (Norwich, 80); Tooley African Continent p. 110.
